The symbology picker matters more than it looks — a retail product code needs EAN-13 or UPC-A specifically, since that's what checkout scanners are built to read, while a URL or internal reference code has no such requirement and works fine as Code 128 or Code 39. Generating the wrong symbology for the intended use (say, Code 128 on packaging meant to scan at a store checkout) produces a barcode that looks correct but won't actually scan on the hardware it needs to work with.
