JPEG and WebP compress with a quality setting, so file size drops smoothly as quality drops. PNG has no built-in quality setting — it's a lossless format — so smaller PNGs come from reducing the color palette instead. That works well for screenshots, illustrations, and graphics with few flat colors, but photos saved as PNG usually shrink more, and keep more of their original quality, if converted to JPEG or WebP instead.
