SEO Checklist
The one signal set before you even upload
Naming the video file with a keyword before uploading is one of the more overlooked items here — YouTube has historically used the original filename as a weak ranking signal, so uploading straight from a camera's default filename like "IMG_4821.mp4" gives up a free, low-effort signal that a properly named file provides instead.
Chapters help SEO sideways, not directly
Chapters don't feed a ranking algorithm on their own — what they actually do is make it easier to jump to a relevant section, which tends to increase how long someone stays on the video. Watch time is one of YouTube's strongest actual ranking factors, so the SEO benefit here is indirect but real.
Tags matter less than the first two
Tags are the item on this checklist with the smallest actual effect on discovery — they mainly help YouTube correct for an obvious misspelling in the title, not surface a video to a new audience. Time spent refining the title and the first two lines of the description usually pays off more than a long tag list.
