Does the fold count characters, or lines?
Lines, not characters — the cutoff is a fixed three-line clamp regardless of how many characters those lines happen to contain. That means manual line breaks change where the fold lands: the same sentence written as five short lines reaches "See More" in far fewer total characters than it would as one dense paragraph, since each line break forces a new line whether or not it's actually full.
Does attaching a photo or video change the fold?
No — the text fold is a property of the caption itself, separate from whatever media is attached. A post with a photo and a text-only post truncate at the same line count; the photo just adds something to stop the scroll before anyone reads a word of the caption underneath it.
