Instagram crops your photo into a circle — see how much of the corners get cut off at every size it's actually displayed at.

The "Story ring" size matters more than it looks — it's the gradient-bordered version shown whenever you have an active story, and it renders smaller and slightly tighter than the plain profile photo. A logo that reads fine at the 150px desktop size can still get lost once it's cropped down to the 56px story ring.

Four different sizes exist here because Instagram's own interface reuses the same photo across genuinely different UI contexts — a full profile visit, a mobile view, an active story, and a comment — so a photo that only gets checked at one size can quietly fail at the others without ever being caught until a specific viewer complains it looks "cut off."
