Format
A square post sits next to whatever you post before and after it in your profile grid, so it's worth checking a new design against your existing grid rather than judging it on its own — a bold background color that looks fine in isolation can clash with the posts sitting directly beside it.
1080×1080 is Instagram's own recommended export size for a square post — uploading something smaller gets upscaled by Instagram's servers and can look visibly softer than a post exported at full resolution from the start.
Going out as a Story or Reel cover too? Build each version separately at its native aspect ratio using the Story Maker or Reel Cover Maker rather than force-fitting one square image into a taller frame.
