This is a plain circle-crop preview — the photo you upload above isn't pulled from any account. It renders at the three sizes Threads actually displays a profile picture at, so you can see how much of the corners get cut off before setting anything live.

The reply-avatar size is the one worth paying closest attention to, since it's the smallest of the three — a face or logo that gets cropped out at 32px will still look fine on the larger profile-page size, so checking the smallest size first catches the failure case the other two would miss.
